Storm Drain Clearing

Your storm drains are the underground pipes that carry rainwater away from the house. On most North Shore homes, the downspouts tie into them, and the water runs out to the street, a ravine, or a dry well. When those lines clog, the water has nowhere to go. It overflows at the downspout, soaks the ground along the foundation, and finds its way into the basement.

The usual culprits are leaves, gutter grit, and tree roots. Older homes often have clay tile storm lines, and roots love the joints in clay.

Signs Your Storm Drain Is Clogged

  • Water gushing out the top of a downspout in heavy rain.
  • Puddles or soggy ground near the foundation.
  • Water in the basement after a storm.
  • A yard drain or catch basin that won’t empty.
  • Ice building up at downspouts in winter.

How We Clear It

We find where the line runs and clear it from the downspout or catch basin with the right tool for the pipe. Then we run water through it to make sure it drains. If something keeps coming back, like roots or a collapsed section, we’ll put a camera in the line and show you what we see.

Storm Drain Clearing FAQs

Is a storm drain the same as a sewer line?

No. A storm drain carries rainwater from downspouts and yard drains. Your sewer line carries wastewater from toilets and sinks. They’re separate pipes and usually go to different places.

Why is water coming out of the top of my downspout?

The underground pipe it drains into is blocked or broken. The water backs up until it spills out at the top.

How often should storm drains be cleared?

If you have big trees nearby, it’s smart to have them checked every year or two, ideally in fall after the leaves drop.

Can a clogged storm drain flood my basement?

Yes. When a storm line backs up, water collects against the foundation and can seep through walls and floor cracks, or overwhelm your sump pump.
